Surprise Chicks

Machine:

Bulky

Yarn:

4-ply Red Heart  - Yellow or any other color;

small amounts of orange, black or blue yarn

Tension:

5

Supplies:  Fiberfill; plastic egg or chocolate egg.

 

 

Chick:

1.

Tension 5.  Using yellow yarn, e-wrap cast-on over 21 stitches (L-11 to R-10).

2.

Knit 2 rows.

3.

Increase 1 stitch at beginning of each row until there are 31 stitches.

4.

Bind off 8 stitches at the beginning of the next 2 rows.

5.

Bring all needles to hold position. Weave a piece of yarn over and under needles.  This will be used as a draw string to gather in for the neck.

6.

Knit 1 row.

7.

Increase 1 stitch at the beginning of next 4 rows (19 stitches).

8.

Knit 1 row.

9.

Hand knit eyes on L-4 and R-3.  Put L-4 and R-3 into hold position.  Set lever to hold and knit 1 row.

10.

Release hold lever.  Knit 2 rows. 

11.

Change to Tension 3.  Transfer every other stitch to adjacent needle and put empty needles to out-of-work position. 

12.

Knit one row and sew off.

13.

Sew back, top of tail and head. Stuff head with Fiberfill.  Tighten draw string to pull in neck and secure.

13.

Beak:  With right side of head facing and using orange yarn, hang 3 stitches between eyes and 1 row down. Knit 1 row, decrease 1 stitch. Knit 1 row, decrease 1 stitch,   Knit 1 row.  Break yarn and pull through remaining stitch.

14. Insert plastic egg  or chocolate egg in space beneath chick.
